GOVERNMENT GRANTS AND GUARANTEED INCOME FOR ARTISTS
The objective of the grant and guaranteed income programme is to give creative and performing artists the opportunity to actively pursue their artistic career and to aid younger artists in establishing themselves as artists.

1. GENERAL INFORMATION

The artist grants and guaranteed income programme comprises several different types of grants that may be applied for by artists primarily living and working in Norway. Applicants must not be in a basic stage of education, including bachelor and master degree programmes. Please see the Regulations Concerning Government Grants and Guaranteed Income for Artists for further information (for the original Norwegian version click here).

Application deadline is October 15th every year. Announcement of awards is normally made at the end of March the following year. Click on "Tildeling" on the top menu for a list of awardees in 2012. For information concerning the application process, please see "Applying for grants and guaranteed income" below.


2. GRANTS WITH APPLICATION DEADLINE OCTOBER 15TH

Work grant: Can be applied for and awarded for a period of one to five years. The work grant is meant to provide artists with the opportunity to work with projects or in-depth artistic exploration to further develop their artistic work.

Work grant for younger/newly established artists: Can be applied for and awarded for a period of one to three years. This work grant is meant to give younger artists in an establishment phase the opportunity for artistic development and to better enable them to make a living as artists. Applicants should not be over 35 years of age in the year of application, although exceptions can be made in special circumstances.

Miscellaneous grant: Allotted to artists for specific purposes such as travel, studies or materials relevant to the applicant's artistic work and development.

Houen's and Mohr's foundation grant: The grant is specifically for travel or study expenses. It is allotted every other year to visual artists, architects and artists who work with architecture-related art forms (2012, 2014) and every other year to musicians, composers, actors, authors and journalists (2013, 2015).

Guaranteed income: Can be applied for and allotted to professional artists who primarily work and reside in Norway and who have made a qualitative contribution to the arts over a period of several years. Guaranteed income is intended to provide artists with financial stability and the possibility of having artistic enterprise as their primary form of occupation.


3. OTHER GRANTS

Grant for older deserving artists: Awarded for life in appreciation of long-time and valuable contribution to the arts. There are no application announcements for this grant. Awards are made on the basis of proposals made by a group, union or organization with good knowledge of the artist's activity. An artist may also promote himself/herself as a candidate through an artist organization.

Grant on completion of art studies: Awarded according to certain criteria to art students on completion of their studies. Applies only to students who have received financial support from Lånekassen during the last academic year and who have studied at the colleges mentioned in the regulations, please see Forskrift om stipend basert på gjennomført kunstutdanning (only available in Norwegian). Can not be applied for on the application forms. Please contact Statens kunstnerstipend or your place of education for further information.


4. APPLYING FOR GRANTS AND GUARANTEED INCOME

Next deadline for applications for grants, foundation grants and guaranteed income is October 15th 2012.
The application forms will be available for downloading from September 15th.

All applicants must read the Ministry of Culture's Announcement of Government Grants and Guaranteed Income for Artists (available from September 15th) carefully before applying for grants or guaranteed income. The announcement provides important information concerning the application process and more.

      *Note that guaranteed income can not be allotted in certain artist groups.
